July 8, 2009: 6:30 AM. I didn't know John Carroll well. I principally remember him as an avid Eddie Matthews fan in an avid Mickey Mantle/Yankee neighborhood and as a member of the Elton Eagles, where I resoundingly flopped as an outfielder . John was also a critic of my stickball pitching style, which was very perceptive on his part. I re-encountered John many years later when my Smithtown neighbor chose to give his former Huntington neighbor a tour of my property without informing me of said tour and I confronted the "intruders" with a shotgun. No one was shot, fortunately. It was after intros that I realized I knew this "kid" from ages ago. He was my self-same 157th Street stickball critic. We chatted for a while and he eventually went home. It's indeed a very small world. As we Old Neighborhood denizens gradually shuffle off this mortal coil, it's nice that we have fond memories. I want to extend my sincere sympathies to John's family. I hope he spends his eternity socking homers in the God League. Gene Lalor

July 9, 2009: 12:11 PM.  My name is Jim Graham and I have known John since 1967 when we were young guys working at Con Edison in the Emergency # 9 board at 708 First Ave. We worked rotating shifts and John was the guy assigned to break me in on the Emergency desk. We had quite a bit of fun working together, a guy from the Bronx and I was from Brooklyn. John and I loved sports especially Baseball and we would spend most of our shift discussing players past and present. He loved Eddie Matthews and Mickey Mantle and I was a true Brooklyn Dodger fan and loved Gil Hodges and Jackie Robinson. At other times we would play jokes on one another making phone calls disguising our voices and reporting outrage situations to Customer Service, we use to drive the General Foreman batty some nights. It was all in fun and nobody got hurt. In 1969 when the Company decentralized I ended up being transferred to the Bronx Emergency Division and worked out of Van Nest yard and John transferred to West End Ave working the C.I.G. desk. It would be some 29 years before we met up again and you would have thought we had seen each other daily as we just took up where we left off so many years ago. We now had grown children and Grand Children and we still loved Baseball and got to tell each other old war stories from our days at 708 first Ave. We spent about an hour on the telephone one day just telling stories from our days at 708 First Ave. I was now working in Westchester, in Emergency Operations still living in Brooklyn and John was in Sub-Stations in Hellgate. I retired in 2002 after working 41 years and have fond memories of days at Con Edison and John was certainly one of them. To the family I wish to extend to you my deepest sympathy on the loss of your Husband, Father and Grandfather. I will keep John in my prayers at Mass on Sunday and light a candle that he playing ball with Eddie Matthews and Mickey Mantle, and getting to chat with our old buddies from Con Ed who now call heaven there home. Sincerely, Jim Graham

July 10, 2009:  11:16 AM.  To FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF JOHN CARROLL:
John and I were raised in the same apartment house in the South Bronx. Our families were as close as relatives. Our fathers played cards on the roof on hot summer nights. Our mothers took turns taking care of the children when one or the other was elsewhere. As we went on to different lives in our adult years, we always kept in touch by phone simply explaining our identities to those who asked "This is apartment eight calling apartment nine" or vice versa. Eventually our wives and children got used to it and knew who was calling.

John was a fountain of old neighborhood memories. If there was a piece of memory missing in your noggin, simply call John Carroll and he would cure your incomplete memory and make it whole again. His stories were always filled with the laughter and fun we had as kids on the sidewalks and streets of the Bronx.  As we grew up as children, we didn't  need a Disney Land.  We had our neighborhood that gave us all the excitement and small pleasures that make a life full of promise and hope. When I visited John in Florida last March,  he and his lovely wife Chris gave a party for his friends from the old neighborhood. We totally enjoyed mentally walking through the neighborhood of our younger days.  I knew John was sick at the time, but he never brought it up or dwelt on it. I admired him for it.

I will miss my friend of yesterday. He will always be part of my treasured memories.

To Chris and  Sons, I extend my condolences.  He was always proud of you and never stopped bragging about you.  God Bless.  John Manning, Yonkers, NY

July 13th 2009:      The late John Carroll died of cancer but also had mesothelamonia (spelling ?).  His funeral was on Monday, July 13 in Florida. He was then cremated.  He married Chrissy Mahoney from Silver Beach in Throgg's Neck and they lived in Florida.  I saw him two years ago with Chrissy at a St. Pat's Bronx reunion in Florida at Mike and Sandie Charles house.  He was a good man.  Billy Bartsch (Silver Beach). PS   If anyone wants Chrissy's e-mail address let me know. I'm sure she would be pleased to hear from John's old friends.  Posted by billy bartsch billyshores@sbcglobal.net.
