JOHN MICHAEL QUINN  

 John Michael Quinn was born on September 4, 1942 in New York, NY.  Writer is unaware of what Parish he grew up in or what High School he graduated from.  Writer has been informed that John joined the class that began in 1956 as they began their studies in St Josephs Seminary, Dunwoodie, NY in 1962. He therefore must have attended 2 years of College somewhere.  He left the seminary after one year in Dunwoodie.

NEW YORKER KILLED SAVING PALS IN VIET

Sgt John M Quinn, a 23 year old New Yorker who interrupted his studies for the priesthood to enlist, died a Hero's death last week on a battlefield in South Viet Nam. 

A squad leader with Company C, 1st Battalion of the 1st Cavalry Division, Quinn took over as a Forward Observer calling in fire from his outfit's Mortar Platoon after the previous observer had been wounded.

IN PURSUIT OF THE VIET CONG 

 His unit, with other elements of the 1st Cavalry, was pursuing an estimated two Company's of Viet Cong near Tuy An, about 12 miles northwest of Bong Son in Binh Dinh Province.

NEWS Correspondent Joseph Fried reported Saturday from Saigon that last Monday Quinn's Unit and another company came under heavy machine-gun fire from well prepared Communist positions just west of Tuy AN.

The battle raged through the night and in the early daylight of Tuesday, the Yanks stormed enemy positions, killing 218 reds.

HIT BY SNIPER 

In the attack, Quinn was fatally wounded by sniper fire.

The official journal of the battle, records that mortar and artillery fire had silenced the Red machine guns.  Eyewitnesses went further, saying that Quinn performed several acts of bravery that saved many of his comrades during the fight.

STUDIED AT ST JOSEPH'S 

Quinn, a former student at St Joseph's Seminary in Yonkers, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Quinn. His father, a former editorial employee of THE NEWS, now owns his own public relations firm. Also surviving are three brothers and three sisters. 

Quinn whose 3 year enlistment would have been up in June, had made 21 parachute jumps with his Airborne Unit.

His body will be returned to Arlington National Cemetery for burial.
